Buddhist Monuments in the World

Buddhist Monuments of the world have, a number times, made people look at them with awe. Their magnificence is inspiring. They make you feel the greatness of both the Buddha and Buddhism. At still other times, the magnificence is missing. Instead what is seen is a small structure. However, this does not in any way lessens the importance of the monument for it is the faith more than the size that draws people from all over the world to these monuments.

Buddhist Monuments of India
Let’s begin with the Buddhist monuments of India. Two of the most famous monuments that need to be

mentioned at the very outset are the Sanchi Stupa and theAmravati Stupa. The first one is located in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh while the second is situated in Andhra Pradesh, a state in south India. The two hold the distinction of being the largest (Amravati) and the second largest (Sanchi) stupa in the country. 

Other stupas that are important in Indian Buddhism include the Barhut stupa, Dhamek stupa, Dharmarajika stupa and Shanti stupa. Apart form these, Buddhist Monuments at Dhauli, Ratnagiri, Udayagiri, Lalitgiri, Bhagalpur, Pithalkhora, Hirapur, Langudi, Sirpur and Ratnagar too make for an interesting visit for Buddhist tourists on a trip to India. For those desirous of exploring Buddhism more can also pay a visit to the Archaeological Nalanda Museum while on a trip to Bihar andArchaeological Museum of Sarnath when in Uttar Pradesh. The Animeshlochan Chaitya is yet another worthvisiting Buddhist place in Bihar.

Buddhist Monuments in Indonesia
One of the most important Buddhist monument of Indonesia, Borobudur, also holds the distinction of being the largest Buddhist monument found anywhere on this earth. It is a stupa belonging to Mahayana tradition of Buddhism. You can visit it by making Yogyakarta, one of important cities of island of Java, Indonesia, your base.

Buddhist Monument of Myanmar
The pagodas are the prime attraction for anyone interested in exploring Buddhism in Myanmar. These pagodas are not only beautiful, but they reveal a lot about the progress of Buddhism in the country as well as its present status. Some of the most important ones are the Shwedagon Pagoda, Kaba Aye Pagoda and theBotahtaung Pagoda. The first of these, it is believed, preserves the hair strands of the historical Buddha together with relics of three other Buddhas of this world. The Kaba Aye Pagoda marks the 6th world Sixth Buddhist Council of 1954-56. The Botahtaung Pagoda, too, preserves the relics of the Buddha which, it is believed was guarded on its way from India to Myanmar by thousand military leaders. 

Buddhist Monuments of Laos
Pha That Luang is the one of the most important Buddhist Monuments of Laos. It preserves the relic of the Buddha, a breastbone and can be visited by making Vientiane your base.
